College savings
Project example college costs against monthly savings. The tuition figures are examples, not a school quote, and tax benefits are not calculated.
$128,320
Sample gap from the example costs. Not financial advice.
How this college savings estimate works
Each college year costs this year’s example, inflated for the years until that year, times the share of the bill you want to cover. Savings compound monthly until college starts. Contributions in the “start later” row wait two years.
Questions
- Are the college costs real tuition?
- No. In-state, out-of-state, and private amounts are round examples you can replace. The page inflates whatever annual cost you leave in the field.
- Does this include a 529 tax break?
- No. Tax treatment of 529 plans depends on the state and on how the money is used. This calculator only projects savings against inflated costs.
- What is the monthly amount to close the gap?
- The deposit that, with the return you enter, grows today’s savings to the inflated total cost by the start of college. If savings already cover the cost, that amount is zero.
