How this Roth IRA estimate works
Year-by-year contributions grow at an annual return you enter, with monthly compounding consistent with other retirement tools on this site. Tax rates and IRS limits are editable assumptions — not tax advice. Withdrawal rules on age and how long the account has been open apply in real life; see irs.gov.

Questions
- How does a Roth IRA work in this calculator?
- Contributions are added at the start of each year, capped at the limit fields you enter (plus catch-up at age 50+). The balance compounds monthly at your return assumption until retirement age. Qualified withdrawal rules are not modeled in detail — see irs.gov.
- How is Roth vs traditional compared?
- Roth contributions are after tax. Traditional contributions use pre-tax dollars at the same out-of-pocket cost, with a simplified taxable side account for tax savings on gains. When tax rates are equal, the two are about equal in this model.
- What are the contribution limits?
- The limit and catch-up fields are editable assumptions labeled as our understanding of 2026 limits. Verify current amounts at irs.gov before relying on them.
- Does this check Roth eligibility?
- No. If you enter income, an informational flag may note whether you are below, within, or above the phase-out range you entered. It does not reduce contributions unless you change them.
- What about backdoor Roth strategies?
- Complex conversion strategies are outside this calculator. Ask a tax professional if that applies to your situation.
